Nora Abete, Deputy Mayor and Councillor for Mobility and Sustainability, visited the Monte Cabras area this morning to celebrate the progress of the biodiversity improvement project.
This initiative seeks to recover the area’s natural wealth and promote its revival as a space for responsible recreation and environmental education.
Monte Cabras, located between Bilbao and Erandio, has been the site of significant actions since December 2023, following the completion of the works on the Artxanda walkway that crosses the area. The intervention has included eradicating invasive alien species such as false acacia (Robinia pseudoacacia), pampas grass (Cortaderia selloana), and summer lilac (Buddleja davidii). Native species such as English oaks (Quercus robur), holm oaks (Quercus ilex), cork oaks (Quercus suber), and laurels (Laurus nobilis) have been planted in their place.
In addition to planting native flora, microhabitats such as cairns, a pond for amphibians, and an insect hotel have been created and installed, along with six information panels. These panels provide information on the location and interventions, the insect hotel, the orchid garden, the amphibian wetland, and the cork oak grove.
